Why You Should Work For a Company That Has Your Back

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disease causing uncontrollable growth of cysts in the kidney and is the most common, life-threatening genetic disease (8th leading cause of death in the US). It affects approximately 14.2 million people worldwide. There is no cure for PKD. Once kidney failure takes place, patients have two options: dialysis or transplant.

PKD has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was young, my brother and sister were diagnosed with the recessive form of PKD. Several years later, both my Grandma and Mother were diagnosed. Eventually, at the age of 21, I was also diagnosed. Because this is a genetic disease, my two daughters have a 50% chance in having it as well.

Since this is a silent disease, I’ve dedicated the past 5 years to volunteering for the Central Ohio Chapter for PKD. Last year I was the Walk Coordinator and moved into a Chapter Coordinator position in 2016. As a Chapter Coordinator, I not only help coordinate events, but in some cases, mentor and help others who are fighting this disease. There are also several different other events that take place in Columbus for PKD that help those affected such as nutritional programs and fundraising events that I help coordinate.

TSP has always played a huge role in supporting my efforts in finding a cure for PKD. They have not only been co-workers, but also a strong support system that has been there for me in my fundraising efforts and friends who have been there when I need it most.  We have held several different fundraisers in our office - happy hours, bake sales, raffles and pizza parties. I feel as though I am never alone, it is always a group and team effort.

Through our events last year, we raised $3,000 to help find a cure and raise awareness for PKD. This year, TSP decided to become a corporate sponsor, which has helped build our team and awareness of this disease. This is what the #powerofpersonal means to me– TSP not only goes above and beyond to help with the fundraising efforts for PKD, but they help because they know that it is important to me, their employee, to find a cure. It’s nice to work for a company that always has your back.

It is important for me to continue to raise awareness since many people are unaware of this disease and the impact it has on families. Please join us and help raise awareness at the Walk for PKD Saturday, October 15th, from 9:00am-12:00pm at Wolfe Park in Columbus, OH.

You can help us reach our fundraising goals and #ENDPKD donating to the TSP Trailblazers here. Every donation, no matter the size, is a step towards a cure.
