How good recruiters deliver bad news

There's plenty that I love about my job as a recruiter. Getting to know candidates. Helping them find their dream jobs. Helping my clients find great people to make products that change the world.

The one part I hate is delivering bad news. It's an unavoidable part of this career, but disappointing someone who won't get a job offer is never my favorite part of the day.

Regardless, I still have to make that call despite my own feelings. Here's why:

  • It's all about finding the best fit for a role. At TSP we design our interviews to gather specific information about our candidates to find someone who will succeed in the positions we're filling. I might really respect a candidate, but if they aren't the right fit, I know they would ultimately be unhappy in the position. However, that person could be a great candidate for an opening I'm trying to fill next month. It's important to me that I end things on a positive note in case I can help them out later on.
  • It's just part of the job. When I'm trying to fill an open position, I know there will only be one candidate who comes out on top. Once I know who isn't a good fit for the job, all I can do is tell them so they can move on to their next opportunities.
  • Interviewing takes time. Plenty of my candidates work full-time while scheduling calls with me or other recruiters, and I know that isn't easy. So when candidates sacrifice their time to go through our process, they deserve acknowledgement and closure even when the news isn't what they hoped for.

It's not the most fun call to make – or receive. But the best recruiters still put in the time for follow-up so each candidate has a positive experience, no matter the outcome of an interview. That's what the #powerofpersonal is about: making real connections with real people.
