3 Tips For Recruiting Marketing Professionals In The Life Sciences

Filling a position in marketing can be challenging, especially in the life sciences industry. They must have a passion for marketing as well as a passion for saving lives through medicine. You’ll need to find someone who loves your product, has the experience and metrics for success, and knows the right questions to ask.

Here are 3 tips to help you successfully recruit marketing professionals in the pharma / biotech industry:

  1. Do they have sales experience? Have they moved from a sales position to marketing? If so, they’ve likely taken a pay cut to go after their passion for marketing. This illustrates they are not only driven but patient and disciplined, traits that are vital to successful marketing professionals. The best marketing candidates are the ones playing the long game, wanting to make steady progress and become entrenched in their company.
  2. Gauge their credentials. Do they have an MBA? Do they have a desire to get one? Have they won awards for sales performance? While it is certainly not a negative if a candidate does not have these credentials, it is a positive if they do. It helps illustrate their desire for improvement and growth, as well as their ability to be dynamic and focus on the bigger picture.
  3. Don’t be afraid to talk about the challenges. The best marketers are intrigued by the everyday challenges of the role. Be transparent about the challenges and see how they react; this is an opportunity to let them do the talking and let them articulate their strategy. Ask the hiring manager what the key objectives are for the role and inquire how a candidate would take these on. What is their 30, 60, 90 day plan?

Most importantly, remember that each candidate is different. The best thing you can do is take the time to get to know them and understand what makes them unique. Ensure the role is right for them, not just that they are right for the role. This will help increase the chance of placement and retention.
